Our Practice
At The Pet Doctor, we're here to help your animals stay healthy, giving each of them individualized care to maintain their well being. When we opened our doors in 1973, our mission was simple: to give every animal the chance to have a happy and healthy life. During our long history of service, many positive changes have occurred both at The Pet Doctor and in veterinary medicine. Our veterinarians offer a wide variety of medical, surgical and dental services. Our hospital has advanced equipment and technologies, including comprehensive in-house testing for accurate diagnosis, digital x-ray, surgical suite, dental suite, laser therapy and a pharmacy. Everyone on our staff has a deep love for animals and is committed to providing high-quality service and care.

Dr. Erika Romman started in the trenches as a Veterinary Assistant in Kirkland. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Biology/Biological Sciences from Gonzaga University before obtaining her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine at Washington State University. Dr. Romman has recently practiced in Wisconsin while her husband Mitchell attended Law School, but they both longed for a return to the Pacific Northwest.
In joining the Pet Doctor, Dr. Romman aims to provide compassionate, quality care while maintaining a strong client relationship. She holds a special interest in internal medicine, soft tissue surgery, imaging, and canine reproduction.
Also held in special interest, are her two dogs Pigeon (Bernese Mountain Dog) and Kindle (Duck Tolling Retriever). Outside of work she enjoys spending time at their family lake house on Mason lake, as well as attending dog sport activities such as dog shows, agility, and rally obedience.

Dr. Nicole Fujie
Doctor
Dr. Fujie earned her degree at Washington State University in 2009, where she met her husband Lance. She has extensive veterinary experience in a variety of clinical settings, but has finally found a place to grow and set down roots at The Pet Doctor. She is certified as a Fear FreeTM professional. She enjoys volunteering at high volume spay & neuter clinics and is currently serving on the board of the Northwest Spay & Neuter Center. She was nominated by a client in 2017 for Best Veterinarian of Western Washington and won by popular vote! While she is a transplant from Hawaii, she enjoys the diversity offered by the central location of her neighborhood in North Tacoma. Her fur-children include: Tilly and Maci (Duck Toller Retrievers) and Phoebe (French Bulldog). In her free time, she enjoys trail running & marathons, hiking, paddle boarding, golfing, and snowboarding.

Dr. Cynthia Smith
Doctor
Dr. Cindy Smith earned her degree from Washington State University in 1987. She moved to Tacoma and joined The Pet Doctor family in 1989. Her interest in small animal reproductive care began to flourish, which prompted her to begin practicing Small Animal Reproductive Medicine exclusively in 1993.
There are no typical days at the office for Dr. Smith. Her appointments on any given day could range from an Infertility Workup, to a Transcervical Insemination, to a Caesarian Section (Please see Reproductive Care under the Services tab for a comprehensive list of services offered). Dr. Smith frequently makes herself available outside of her scheduled office hours for emergency procedures as well for her established cases.
Dr. Smith is a Member of the Society for Theriogenology (since 2000) and a regular attendee to educational conferences on the topic of canine reproduction.
Dr. Smith has extensive personal experience with canine breeding and showing, which allows her to relate on a personal level with her clients. She bred and showed Maltese dogs for 25 years. She also competed in obedience as well as conformation and once put a Utility Dog Degree (U.D.) on her Shih Tzu!
While her days of breeding and showing Maltese dogs are behind her, she has found a new passion in showing Polish and Araucana Bantam Chickens—no handlers, no politics, no c-sections!
Dr. Smith has spent much of her free time as “Vet on Grounds” for fairs and dog shows and volunteering for 4H. She has frequently been an invited speaker for dog clubs, has published articles on both dogs and chickens, made a cameo appearance in CMT’s The Chicken People, and has also made music videos about artificial insemination.
